All Systems Red

All Systems Red

by Martha Wells

I hate having emotions about reality

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are shadowed by their Company-supplied SecUnit who has hacked its own governor module. As it tries to sort out living authentically, it refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Scornful of humans, all it wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

While writing All Systems Red, Martha Wells realized she is non-neurotypical. Perhaps this is why so many of us love this series.

Also, Murderbot arose from the lived experience in 2016 America, “the idea that you could go out and do a lot of violence but maybe you just wanted to stay home and watch tv.”

Exactly the companion we needed.
